About  us

Kalangu is the Hausa people's (Nigeria) name for a  talking drum. In many African countries the talking drum was used as a means of communication between different groups of people. The talking drum has an ability to mimic the spoken word effectively and was used to pass on long distant messages of coronations, deaths, celebration, and war. It was also used for entertainment, praise singing, fun, folklore, and leisure.

In the same  way we hope that the café will spread its message from communities to communities.

With language barriers, grandma and me communicate with body language and food. I love to eat and she enjoys cooking. We sit here in front of the family house; sorting beans, cutting spinach, grinding seeds, while she, in three different languages, tells about her childhood, how she met grandpa, what she thinks of the future, and of course the secret ingredient in her mbika.

And this is what Kalangu is. A member café so we can create together. A curious space so we can break barriers. An open place so we can be a community. And there's always delicious food to gather around when words are in the way. By becoming a member you support all this!
